For the third time in month, a person was attacked in the Lake Phalen area of St. Paul. This time, it was a 23 year old woman jogger, according a story on KARE-11 TV.
It’s sad that some person or persons are intent on targeting people in this area and making them feel vulnerable. Most of these cases have not involved robbery attempts, just criminal assault. I don’t know whether these criminals are frustrated about the economy and have turned to taking their frustrations out on innocent victims, but I do know that is has to stop!
I would love to see one of these criminals run into someone carrying pepper spray or a Taser and getting a taste of their own medicine.

I just saw this story on the local news tonight about a man who had stolen a car. This thief was so proud of himself that he actually called 911 and reported that he had stolen a car and, since he was much smarter than the police, they would never catch him!
Well, he was wrong. The police arrived at his residence the next day and arrested him. You see, the police have this new fangled device called “caller ID”. It lets them see exactly who is calling them and provides the callers phone number, etc. This feature is very useful for determining who called them in case the caller gets disconnected at some point during the phone call. People that need help, or are reporting to authorities that someone else needs help, can get disconnected for various reasons like passing out, trying to escape a dangerous situation like a criminal chasing them, etc.
It turns out that caller ID also comes in real handy when the authorites are trying to locate a REALLY STUPID CRIMINAL!
Maybe it’s just me, but it sure seems like there is a lot more crime these days. I think that when times get tough, Americans naturally do whatever they can to survive. Most of us with an education and some work experience have options regarding what type of work we will accept even in the current dismal state of the economy.
If you’re young and stupid, you probably don’t have many (or any) sources of income to turn to. Unfortunetly, it seems like there are more people turning to crime these days as a way to support themselves. The crime industry is an equal idiot employment opportunity. There are no resumes needed, no job interviews to go on, no sending your resume off into some black box and just praying that SOMEONE will eventually invite you to meet for an interview.
Can you imagine some armed robber holding up a gas station and the clerk behind the window asking the robber “Is this your first robbery attempt? Because you act like you don’t have much experience at this sort of thing. How many robbery’s have you successfully pulled off in the past? Have you actually ever shot a person? I’m sorry, but I really don’t think you’re qualified to pull off this robbery. I think it’s best if you just leave because we would like to pursue some other, more qualifed robbers. If you will just leave a business card, we’ll add your information to our database of other criminals and follow up with you if we have a need for your services within the next 12 months.”

I just registered my new TASER C2 with TASER International and was thinking I made a pretty good investment in the safety of myself and my family. Let me explain how valuable this device is, in case you’re not familiar the TASER C2.

The TASER C2 is a self-defense electronic control device Manufactured by TASER International, the same company that manufactures TASERs used by Law Enforcement personnel all over the world. The TASER C2 is just as effective as the TASER used by Law Enforcement, plus it has some smart additional features which make it perfect for any ordinary citizen to use.
The TASER C2 uses a replaceable cartridge containing compressed nitrogen to deploy to the small probes that are attached to the TASER C2 by insulated conductive wires with a maximum length of 15 feet. The TASER C2 transmits electrical pulses along the wires and into the body of affecting the sensory and motor functions of the peripheral nervous system. The energy can penetrate up to 2 inches of clothing, or 1 inch per probe.
How does a TASER work?
The human nervous system communicates with simple electrical impulses. The command center (brain and spinal cord) processes information and makes decisions. The peripheral nervous system includes the sensory and motor nerves. The sensory nerves carry information from the body to the brain (temperature, touch, etc.) the motor nerves carry commands from the brain to the muscles to control movement and can be involuntary in response to the sensory information. An example would be involuntary muscle reaction to pull the hand away from a hot object.
TASER technology uses similar electrical pulses to costs stimulation that affects the century and motor nerves. No muscular incapacitation (NMI) occurs when a device is able to cause involuntary stimulation of both the sensory nerves and the motor nerves. It is not dependent on pain and is effective on subjects with a high level of pain tolerance.
Previous generations of stun guns could primarily affect the Senator nerves only, resulting in pain compliance. A person with a very high tolerance pain (e.g., a drug abuser or a trained, focused fighter) might be able to fight through the pain of a traditional stun gun.
Electricity must be able to flow between the probes of the electrodes.
Electricity generally follows the path of least resistance between the probes. The greater the spread between the probes on the target, generally the greater the NMI effectiveness.
Electricity will generally not pass to others in contact with the subject unless contact is made directly between or on the probes.
Electricity can arc through clothing.
Exposure to water will not cause electrocution to increase the power to the subject (electrical charge is fixed inside the TASER device, and will not increase significantly even with environmental changes).
TASER technology uses similar electrical pulses to cause stimulation that affects the sensory and motor nerves. Neromuscular Incapacitation (NMI) occurs when a device is able to cause an involuntary stimulation of both the sensory nerves and the motor nerves. It is not dependent on pain and is effective on subjects of the high level of pain tolerance.
SPECIAL FEATURES TO PREVENT MISUSE
Every time a TASER C2 cartridge is deployed, at least 24 small, confetti -like AFID tags are ejected. Each AFID is printed with the serial number of the cartridge deployed, allowing law enforcement agencies to determine the registered owner of the cartridge and track citizen use if ever used in a criminal act.
You are required to complete a criminal background check in order to receive a unique code that will be used to activate your TASER C2. This means that when a TASER C2 has been fired, it will be much easier for the police to track down the registered owner of the device.
The TASER C2, with laser guided targeting, costs $350. It costs another $10 to register your unit with TASER. This is a one-time fee.
The TASER C2 is certainly not the cheapest self defense device available, but I feel this is the most effective, non-lethal self defense device currently on the market and well worth the investment in the safety of myself and my family.

Another week, another disappointing stock market. But, cheer up! I think some long overdue change is on it’s way. And remember, there’s more to life than just money. To paraphrase Abraham Lincoln, “This too, shall pass.”
We don’t have to look too far to see the signs of outrageous greed that ran rampant during the last stock market bull cycle. Here are just some of the highlights from the last week of media reports that exhibit the excessive greediness of corporate executives:
-
Speaking of General Motors, GM and Chrysler told the U.S. Congress that they could need $21.6 billion more in aid to keep them going. GM said it could need $100 billion in financing if it filed for bankruptcy, and CEO Rick Wagner said bankruptcy would be “risky” and would only be used as a last resort. I wonder what Wagner really means when he says that a GM bankruptcy would be “risky”? Risky for him, personally, and his future salary and earnings prospect perhaps?
But, as Bob Dylan would say, “The times, they are a changing.” Yes, the Federal Goverment is throwing an awful lot of money at our financial markets to try and stop the decline in our financial markets and restore some resembelance of confidence again. As inflationary as the long-term effects of this loose money policy will be, they really don’t have a choice if they have any hope of preventing the global economy from falling into a long, deep and severe depression.
Critics of President Obama’s new housing rescue plan say they don’t want to pay for their neighbor’s mortgage in the form of higher taxes. Well, I don’t think anyone is happy about paying higher taxes, but what choice do we really have? The economy is messed up, big time. We can’t blame President Obama for this because things were already messed up by the time he was elected into office. He could complain about the crappy job that he inherited from the outgoing administration, but he’s not. He’s doing everything that he can to try and stop the bleeding and prevent any further damage from occuring.
Now, to get back to the headline of this long-winded blog post, It was clear from the November 2008 U.S. Presidential results that Americans wanted change. Not just a little tweak, but a major change. Well, change IS coming. It has to, or else we are all dead. Not just the US economy, but the global economy. How can you imagine that a person as insane as Adolph Hitler became so powerful? Germany was weak from the last major recession and people were starving and desperate for change. These people were so desperate that they decided that while Hitler had some radical ideas, nothing else had worked so far. They HAD to DO SOMETHING! So they put this guy named Hitler with some crazy ideas into power to see if that might fix things. And the rest is history, as they say.
Please don’t misunderstand and think that I’m comparing President Obama to Adolph Hitler, because that is NOT WHAT I’M DOING. American’s are smart enough to learn from the past mistakes of others and I think Obama is exactly what America needs right now to get us out of this financial mess without creating more problems down the road.
Just to be safe, you might want to pick up a C2 TASER in case their’s an uprising in your neigborhood…

A Taser is simply a less lethal alternative to a hand gun. Afterall, you just want to stop your neighbor from attacking you and stealing your stuff. You don’t want to actually KILL HIM, right?

Did you know that there is actually a difference between taser guns and stun guns? Many people don’t know the differences and it is assumed that they are both the same thing. However, while they may both give out electric shocks, there are some differences that you should be aware of. Knowing these differences will help you to choose the best self defense product to suit your needs.

Stun Guns and Taser Guns - The Differences
There are a few differences between stun guns and taser guns that you should be aware of before you choose either of them. They can potentially make a big difference into how safe you are while you are using the products and so it is important to understand the differences and how they affect you.
Taser guns are typically more high tech than stun guns. They work when you are up to fifteen feet away from your attacker. Two probes are sent from the taser gun to the attacker and they become stuck while they emit a seven second initial shock. They require both probes to be attached to the attacker before they will work properly. A stun gun on the other hand needs close contact before it will be effective. It does not have probes but it has a very loud sound that often frightens attackers off before they have had a chance to hurt you.
Taser guns will temporarily paralyze your attacker. They will likely fall down to the ground and they will lose control over their limbs for a short period of time. A stun gun is merely there to give a short shock. It will not paralyze the attacker as long as a taser gun would and it is not as powerful usually as a taser gun either. However, that does not mean to say that a stun gun is not as effective as a taser gun - it can be and it costs a lot less than a taser gun too.
Taser guns can be expensive because they are so effective. They are also bigger than stun guns too. With stun guns you can purchase ones which are designed to fool the attacker. Cell phone stun guns and keychain stun guns are particular popular as they are easy to carry around and they are not obvious like taser guns can be. They would be ideal for anybody who does not want to look like they have a self defense weapon.
Typically taser guns are more effective but stun guns can also be extremely effective too. The noise of the stun gun tends to be enough to scare away many attackers. Then the short shock that is given also causes attackers to think twice about staying and continuing the attack. This is especially the case with cell phone stun guns as the attacker does not expect anything and the shock usually causes them to run away. However some attackers may not be put off by s short shock and that is where taser guns come in. They paralyze the attacker so that they do not have a chance to continue the attack and that leaves you with plenty of time to escape.
Overall both taser guns and stun guns are effective and both can protect you against an attack. However, you should always understand the differences between the two; especially the distances required for them to be effective!

When you think of self defense products you typically think about pepper spray, stun guns or personal security alarms. However, there is another effective form of self defense that is not usually considered and that is a safety light.
How Safety Lights May Help
Safety lights are designed to light up the way when you are out walking on a dark night. Not only do they help you to see better, but they also enable you to draw attention to yourself. This may seem like a bad idea; after all, who wants to draw attention to themselves at night when there are potential attackers out there? Surely the attacker will see you and find it easier to attack you? Well surprisingly drawing attention to yourself does not increase the risk of you being attacked, instead it prevents it.
By drawing attention to yourself with a safety light it enables other people to see you. So if you are attacked there is a better chance that somebody will witness what is happening. Help can then be called and your attacker will be scared off. So that is one way in which a safety light can protect you.
By lighting up the way a safety light will also help you to see potential attackers. Often when you are walking late at night it is difficult to see what is in front of you. That is why so many people are attacked because their attacker can see them, but they did not see their attacker until it was too late. By seeing where you are going you will be able to assess the possible risks ahead and that can potentially stop you from being attacked.
Choosing a Good Safety Light
There are different lights that you can purchase but typically the best types to get are the LED versions. You can also choose between flashing lights and simple constant lights. If you use a flashing light that does help to draw attention to you when you are being attacked. A constant light is better to help you to see where you are going. For best results it would be a good idea to purchase a LED light that has the ability to flash but which also has a constant light on it too.
If you want a light which is convenient to carry then you should choose the Cell Phone flash light. This is designed to peel and stick to your cell phone and it can easily be operated whenever it is needed. It lasts for up to 6,000 hours and you can use it literally everywhere. It is small enough to easily carry around and use outside and generally it is one of the best lights available.
If you just want the simplest of safety lights then the LED light is what you need. It comes with seven different flashing patterns and you can choose from three different styles. There is a wrist strap, a bicycle light and a belt clip. It has a very powerful light and the seven different flashing functions will help you to signal help if it is needed.
Overall safety lights may not be able to directly stop an attack, but they can help to prevent them. It would be a good idea to carry around another self defense product such as pepper spray if you really want to protect yourself, or even just a personal safety alarm to further draw attention to yourself in the event of an attack. You can even purchase combined safety alarms and lights and that may be the best option for you.

How do you feel about the economy in today’s world? We are reading in almost every country, that crime is on the rise due to the problems in the workforce and the fall in the economy. So how will you defend yourself? Recent headlines are reading more and more of bank robberies, home invasions, car vandalism and thefts, purse snatchings, and other criminal behavior. With millions of people out of work, it is no wonder.
Crime analysts have always had different opinions about economic downturns leading to increasing crime rates. However, since the most recent fall on Wall Street, law enforcement agencies worldwide have seen notable increases in violence and property offenses as signs it is related to the economy. Cities around world are reporting robberies in unprecedented numbers compared to recent years, or even decades. Many of the target victims are retail stores which have never seen crimes such as these. Those would include grocery and clothing stores, banks, and even restaurant suppliers. Thefts of cars have jumped nationwide by 164% from last year, and vandalism leading to theft has more than doubled. Most law enforcement officers say it has been in direct correlation to the economy falling.
In October 2008, a survey of 180 law enforcement agencies by the Police Executive Research Forum in Washington, D.C., found that 75% cited the recent rise in crime was related to property crime.
The idea that the crime rate picks up when the economy tanks makes a lot of sense, intuitively. The unemployment rate increases during a recession and some of these newly unemployed people with marginal employment skills will likely turn to crime to support themselves and cover their cost of living.
The FBI states that the most vulnerable portion of the population, are young adults, many of whom have already been in some type of trouble with police, and who were trying to move into the workforce. They can’t find a job to keep them from returning to previously committed lives of crime. The Center for Crime Prevention and Control says the demand for illegal drugs is also being driven to more crime as the economy falls. Major surges in crime, are at their highest since the 1990’s. The sale of illicit drugs is the only way many criminals can find a way to afford the drugs to sell to those who illegally do them.
The combination of declining resources and increases in many offenses may be representing only the first wave of the bad news. Because desperate people do desperate things to stay afloat, there are thousands who are giving away pets because they can’t afford to feed them. Where once there was a dog to bark away an intruder, there is now nothing to deter a thief. People without an income certainly can’t spend upwards of $100 per month to install and run home security systems. Many have turned to the one time purchase of home alarms that do not require monthly service fees.
Many cities saw a dramatic decrease in crime over 2007 and 2008 due to more police patrols. However, 62% of US police departments are now having to cut their forces and cutting overtime spending completely.
Among cities reporting increases in crimes, almost all account this to the sagging economy. Atlanta Police blames the economy for increases of 14% in burglary, and 17% in auto theft. Instead of stealing jewelry and other valuables, burglars are taking flat-screen TVs and computers which can be resold as there is more demand. Thieves are even stealing license plates for the renewal stickers in order to find relief from paying taxes on their vehicles.
The safety of all citizens must be our first priority; the second is the protection of their property. We are doing our part by raising your awareness to methods of protection.

If you are looking for a self defense product with a difference then why not try out instructional combat DVD’s? Designed to teach you how to fight back if needed, instructional DVD’s can be extremely effective at preventing attacks and theft in the street.

How are Instructional DVD’s Helpful?
Many people do not even consider instructional DVD’s because they feel that they will be a waste of time. Preferring instead to attend actual classes, people do often think that DVD’s are a waste of time. However, what if you don’t have the time to attend a martial arts class?

Instructional DVD’s give you the convenience of teaching you self defense techniques within your own home. You can learn at your own time and you will learn everything you need to know about protecting yourself while you are out and about in the street.

Another advantage to instructional DVDs is that you can learn more than one type of self defense. There is a wide range of techniques to choose from including:
Out of the above the Secrets of Gun, Knife Disarmament is probably one of the most informative DVDs that you can purchase for self defense. Gun and knife crime is common in many areas throughout America. When you are attacked with a knife or a gun it can be potentially fatal and often people just do not know how to protect themselves against such weapons. With this DVD you will learn how to disarm an attacker who comes at you with a gun or a knife and that will obviously help you to protect yourself in the street. Not only is it helpful, it is also potentially lifesaving.
Another really useful instructional self defense DVD is the Unarmed Combat Course. This DVD teaches you how to fight without weapons. It will show you the best techniques to use when you are being attacked and when you need to use any means necessary to protect both you and your family. Combining different self defense techniques, this DVD is unique and it will teach you how to protect yourself even in the most violent of situations. What you need to remember is that when you are being attacked, it is likely that your attacker will do anything to hurt you. It is their intention to hurt you and so you need to know exactly how to protect yourself no matter what your attacker throws at you.
One worry that you may have is how do you protect yourself against an attacker who has advanced karate or martial arts skills? Luckily the “Street Sage I” DVD is there to help. It will teach you everything that you need to know about taking down an attacker who has an obvious advantage over you. Whether they are a thug, a martial arts expert or a trained boxer, you will learn exactly how to defend yourself with this DVD.
Overall instructional DVDs may not be the obvious choice when it comes to self defense. However, they can be extremely useful and there are some really exceptional ones available. So why not check out our range of fantastic self defense DVD’s and start learning how to protect yourself against even the toughest of attackers?

With the crime rate taking a toll on the society, very little has been left to the victim’s hand as far as defense is concerned. It is the utter helplessness of the victim that puts the criminals at an advantage. Even though numerous self defense gadgets are available in market these days, a handy, smart and useful gadget always serves as the most apt aid. Cell phone stun guns are one such defense tool that comes to the rescue of a victim in a helpless situation.
Cell phone stun guns are the latest tool in masked self defense. Cell phones are a common gadget carried by almost everyone these days and hence to many, the dual role of the cell phone as the high effective non-lethal self-defense will remain beyond comprehension.
A cell phone stun gun works very effectively. As one presses the end of the stun device pointing towards the teaser or criminal and presses the trigger it dumps the electrical charge into the person’s body and exercises their muscle group vigorously. The longer one holds it on the person, the more effective the shock effect is. Hence a couple of seconds of holding can take a toll on the criminal.
The best part of the usage of cell phone stun gun is that the user will not feel any shock back even if he or she is touching the person or if they are holding on to the victim. The stun effect is actually localized to the place where the user is holding in on the person.
The cell phone stun gun can be as powerful worth 950,000 volts and may also include a flashlight. The flashlight comes as a help when some one needs to light up his or her door while unlocking it. The cell phone stun gun is thus can be used as a unique self defense tool if an attacker tries to hurt some one.
It is here where http://www.laneselfdefense.com serves as an aid. The website brings to table all the useful tools of self defense which comes to your rescue when you need them the most. This power packed tool of self defense takes down an attacker facilitating the victim’s escape.
The self defense cell phone stun gun comes in various designs and colors. They are handy and can be good looking also. Cell phone stun guns can be categorized in to many types. Namely
Camera phone Pretender stun gun: At 950,000 volts, this is one of the high voltage stun guns which are available. Test firing this is enough to stop an attacker. Using it leads the bright electric current to pulsate across the top of the unit creating an intimidating electrical sound.
Stun Master: The Stun Master 800,000 volt Cell Phone Stun Gun is quite simple to use. It can be turned off safety and is touch assailant.
Firestorm: This is one of the most realistic approaches in addressing a potential danger and thus escaping from it.
Be it a crowded place or a lone ally , you will no more feel insecure with this cell phone stun gun in hand. With a security tool of this potential in hand, you have nothing to worry.
Stay safe to stay alive,

A Man’s Home is his Castle, and now thanks to the new law going into effect on Tuesday called the Castle Doctrine he can protect it more fully.
The Castle Doctrine States:
The language in Senate Bill 184, which takes effect Tuesday, Sept. 9, states that the law known as the “Castle Doctrine” will “create a rebuttable presumption that a person acted in self defense or defense of another when using defensive force that is intended or likely to cause death or great bodily harm to another if the person against whom the defensive force is used is in the process of entering or has entered, unlawfully and without privilege to do so, the residence or vehicle occupied by the person using the defensive force.”
While many critics are concerned that this law will become more of an excuse than a viable justification there are still many options besides lethal force.
We all feel obligated to defend our families and ourselves, we also have the right to choose how much force we employ. There are several discreet and temporarily disabling self defense tools that will allow you time to usher your family to safety and call the police.
Tasers, Stun Guns, Mace and Animal Repellents are all excellent alternatives to lethal force. It is a personal decision but it merits reflecting on an age old question; Does the end justify the means?

Personal Security Advice for Travelers.

Summer is the time of year when millions of Americans take a vacation alone, with a spouse, or with the whole family. The excitement of getting away from your usual routine and doing something different is exciting. Very few people, however, plan ahead and take the proper precautions to protect their personal security at home and on the road. Here is some advice to keep in mind so that you may have safer travels.
Personal Security On The Road
If you are traveling for an extended time, notify family members and neighbors that you trust when you leave and when you are expected to return. Make sure they have your contact information (phone numbers for cell phones or hotels/lodging where you will be staying) so they can reach you in an emergency. Arrange to have the post office hold your mail for you and your newspaper delivery temporarily suspended. You may house plants or a garden that neighbors or friends will need to check on and water as needed while you are away.
Your personal security can be improved if you are well prepared for your travel schedule. Check departure times for trains and planes before you begin your travels. This way you won’t get stuck in the wrong terminals and put yourself at risk of getting lost or losing personal items. Try to choose seats that are near aisles or doors, if possible. Always know the location of emergency exits and alarms.
I know it can be difficult, but try not to sleep on public transportation. This can put you at risk of theft while you are asleep. Also, consider buying some clothing and accessories that are specially made to conceal important documents such as your passport, money, and credit cards. It is important to keep an emergency stash of money hidden on your body away from your wallet or purse, so that if you are robbed you can hand over some cash, and they will not get everything, including the passports and credit cards.
If you need to travel with valuables, keep them out of sight from the public and keep the luggage that contains them close to you. Always make sure that your can see the luggage and if someone does try to take your bag, just let it go.
Your personal security is more important that your valuables, so make sure you do not put up a fight with a thief. You do not know if they are carrying a weapon and you really don’t want to find out. The best thing to do is to research the area where you are going to be traveling and make sure that you don’t have to travel anywhere that is isolated and away from the crowds. Try to blend in as much as possible and you will be taking and extra step in protecting your personal security.

It is important for everyone to learn self-defense. You never know when you could become a target. It really doesn’t matter who you are or how big you are. If predators want something from you, they will stop at nothing to get it, unless you surprise them and fight back. Most criminals don’t want any conflict. If you make it hard on them, they may decide it isn’t worth it and leave you alone.
So, what self-defense tips can you put to good use? These suggestions will give you an opportunity to escape.
* Use your thumbs: If you have access to the hands of an attacker, use your thumbs to press down as hard as you can on the fingernails just above the nail bed. Surprisingly, this really hurts. Your attacker will be shocked and in pain and will quickly pull away. This should give you an escape opportunity.
* Hit hard at the bridge of the nose: If you get the opportunity, drive the heel of your palm right into the bridge of your attacker’s nose. A hard enough hit can be fatal. Either way, the blinding pain will cause your assailant to take a step back to recover from the hit. Take advantage of the distraction and run. Yell “fire!” as you run to attract attention. People generally respond and pay more attention when someone yells “fire” instead of “help.”
* Push into a bite: A vicious attacker may bite you. Avoid your instinct to pull away. Instead, push the limb being bitten into the face of your attacker. Cover as much of your attacker’s nose and mouth as possible. The result will be smothering unless the bite is released.
* Knee or kick the groin: It doesn’t matter how strong or large your attacker is. If you get a chance, deliver a strong shot to the groin. Your assailant will instantly double over in agony and allow you a good opportunity to run away. Don’t assume this will only work for a male attacker either. Anyone who is hit hard in that area will be in excruciating pain long enough for you to start running.
Now you have some good techniques that will allow you time to get away. What else can you do to help your situation? Here are some suggestions that most people don’t think of when they are panicked:
* Yell fire: For most people, when trapped in a helpless situation, the instinct is to yell for help. The best way to attract attention and gain help is actually to yell “Fire!” It is a proven fact that the majority of people, especially in densely populated cities, ignore calls for help. People just don’t want to get involved. Yelling “fire” will attract more attention and get you the help you need. If nothing else, someone will call the fire department and the sirens will scare your attacker away. If you are told not to yell or scream, do it anyway. Most attackers will run rather than chance attention drawn to them. They don’t want witnesses.
* Anything can be a weapon: Be creative in your self defense. Smokers can burn the assailant with a lit cigarette, cigar or pipe. Keep your keys handy. A key between your index and middle fingers with the jagged side facing down is a great weapon for stabbing, gouging or scraping. Boots and heels can do a lot of bodily damage with a bit of force behind them. Drinks can temporarily blind someone. Heavy objects like, purses, bags of groceries, briefcases or laptops can knock an attacker off balance briefly.
* Become a moving target: If you do get away, run. If possible, weave as you are running. It is hard for an attacker to hit a moving target, especially when it isn’t going in a straight line.
We would all like to think that it will never happen to us. Odds are, if not you then someone you love will become the victim of an attacker. Everyone needs to learn basic self-defense and encourage others to do so as well.

It is essential that you are clear on the pepper spray laws in your state or anywhere you ravel with pepper spray! It has been said that ignorance is bliss. Well the anti-climatic counterpart of that state meant is that ignorance is no excuse under the law. What you don’t know can hurt you.
Pepper spray laws make it illegal to carry pepper spray in some states. there may also be a ban on certain items in certain states but pepper spray may not be completely illegal.
Normally we explain how different self defense products can benefit you and your loved ones. We would be remiss if we failed to help educate you on what you need to know. Pepper spray laws may not only prohibit the carrying or deployment of pepper spray but of other non-lethal self defense products.
Another point of interest is whom or what you spray. Certain animals are currently protected either because of the type of animal they are or where they reside.
Of course we advocate using non -lethal self defense products but we never advocate breaking the law. Ultimately how you use your pepper spray or other non-lethal self defense products is up to you but we do want you to know what the pepper spray laws are!

Over the past weekend, there was a disturbing story released in the local media that an 18 year old woman was dragged into a men’s restroom in a college dormitory and raped by two men. One of the men restrained the woman while the other man raped.
The woman was visiting some friends and left their dorm room to go to the bathroom. She was gone for about 20 minutes, which her friends thought was odd…but didn’t bother to go look for her. The woman came back to the dorm room crying and told her friends what had happened.
Now, this particular incident happened in a dormatory of a very large university - The University of Minnesota in Minneapolis, MN. This exact same type of crime could really happen at any college campus - large or small.
Unfortunetly, no one is truly safe. I know, it’s a really depressing thought, but wishing that something was true doesn’t really MAKE IT true. We can standby and watch as our friends and loved ones fall victim to these types of crimes or we can do something about it.
Obviously, this woman who was raped didn’t do anything wrong and certainly didn’t deserve to be raped and attacked. What if this woman had a small canister of pepper spray on her belt that she grabbed just as she was walking to the bathroom? Would she have been able to reach for it and use it quickly enough to spray it in her attacker’s face? Maybe or maybe not.
It sure would be nice to hear a story about how a rape attack was PREVENTED by someone who was prepared for the worst, instead of hearing about another innocent victim being attacked. That’s my two cents.

The law tells us that the use of force is justified when it is reasonably believed that it is necessary for self defense against another’s unlawful force. But, you cannot use any more force than is reasonably necessary under the circumstances.
What does this mean? Well, if someone punches you in the face, you are not justified to pull out a gun and shoot him. So, how do you stay safe and remain reasonably protected from being attacked?
Learn Personal Safety Methods:
* Learn to believe in yourself and nurture that belief. You will better trust your strength, wisdom and instincts. You will be more likely to do whatever you need to for self-protection. If you hear that little voice inside called intuition telling you something is wrong, chances are that you are right.
* Face facts. The world can be a dangerous place, and that danger can appear right in your own home or neighborhood. No one is immune to violence and attack. * Be aware. Know what is happening in the world around you. The more informed and alert you are, the better your chances of protecting yourself from attack.
* Appear strong. Strength is exuded from confident individuals. If you look like you are sure of yourself and believe in yourself, you are much less likely to be targeted for an attack. Criminals, like wild animals, prey on the weaker of the species.
Be Smart:
Do you really think that fighting back is going to help you? When dealing with people who are edgy, wound up and possibly on drugs, mounting an attack will only anger and frustrate them, making them even more violent and dangerous. Defend yourself if necessary, but never instigate a physical altercation.
Don’t assume that you will be attacked only by strangers. The majority of attacks involve people who know each other in some way. Be calm and don’t lose your temper or your self control. Humor and speak calmly to your attacker, but don’t condescend. Do anything you can to reduce the tension of the situation: it may save your life.
Reduce your Risks:
* Know your surroundings and remain in well-lit and populated areas. Pay attention to potential hiding places for attackers.
* Don’t take short cuts through isolated areas.
* Avoid going out alone at night.
* Be sure people you know are aware of your typical schedule. If you have plans that are out of the ordinary, like a date, be sure someone knows when you are leaving and when you plan to return.
* Exude self-confidence in all of your actions. If someone is watching you, this will make them think you could be a problem target that they should avoid.
Learn Self Defense:
You can attend a law enforcement or community class, research the Internet or choose any other method to learn some defensive skills. Then practice those skills with someone. The more educated and aware you are of how to avoid and get away from criminals, the better off you will be.
Protection from an attack can be learned and applied by anyone. It isn’t the size or gender of the attacker that matters most. It is the self-confidence and self awareness of the would-be victim that determines the outcome of an attack. If you don’t set yourself up to be a victim, you have a much better chance of not becoming one.

You are prepared to defend yourself, your family and those you love. So in a situation where any of those things are threatened, you’re prepared to do anything, right? Unfortunately, what happens after the event is over must also be considered.
In the midst of defending yourself, you don’t think hard about what the legal ramifications of self-defense might be. Fear and protective instincts put safety and survival as the first priority. When people attack you, they aren’t concerned about your life. Why be concerned about theirs? Because the simple fact of our society is that sometimes the justice system fails to deliver justice at all.
From the legal standpoint, lethal self-defense can be considered excessive force, even if your life was at stake. There is also the issue of what you are willing to live with morally after the fact. Protect your future while you protect yourself, and choose methods of non-lethal self-defense.
First and foremost, as you’ve heard many times before, the best self-defense is to avoid the situation altogether. Always pay attention, walk with purpose, and chose well-traveled areas. Keep trustworthy company. Don’t be a victim by putting yourself at risk. Moving on from that, if something does happen, make sure you are prepared.
Another reason, besides the legal ramifications, to chose non-lethal self-defense is accidents. When we react in fear, sometimes we may take actions that aren’t completely thought through. You may think someone is breaking into your home, but it could be a family member arriving home late. A loved one can recover from injuries, but a fatal gunshot is forever.
There are a variety of different non-lethal self defense weapons available for purchase, ranging from very mild to extremely powerful. Most options are fairly inexpensive and portable, and most of them easily concealed. They are completely legal and much safer than carrying a firearm.
Pepper spray has been around for many years and is still a popular choice because it is small, discrete and easy to carry in a purse. When sprayed in the eyes of an attacker, it temporarily blinds by causing trigger reactions. The eyes automatically close and begin to water. Other effects are runny nose and coughing. The full effect can be felt for up to 45 minutes, giving you time to escape. Take caution with pepper spray, though. Keep an eye on expiration dates and leaking, and make sure never to spray upwind.

www.laneselfdefense.com/peppergel.htm
Personal alarms create a loud noise that can discourage attackers and draw attention to you. These are the most useful if you are somewhere that others can come to your aid. Remember to be realistic and have another option if no one hears your alarm. Don’t depend on others to rush to your aid. Everyone loves a hero, but nobody like to put themselves in danger.

www.laneselfdefense.com/alarm.htm
Stun guns are also a popular option for non-lethal self defense. These electroshock weapons temporarily disable your attacker through the use of electric shock. A variety of jolt levels are available, from a fairly low charge in smaller flashlight-sized stun guns up to 300,000 volts or more. They administer the electric shock through direct contact. Some stun guns come disguised as cell phones, pens or flashlights.

www.laneselfdefense.com/hotshotstungun.htm
Tasers are also electroshock weapons. Media scrutiny has recently surrounded tasers after several high-profile incidents with law enforcement. While these officers may have used excessive force in those situations, when defending yourself against attack, that matters little. Tasers deliver a shock from a distance of several meters to subdue and temporarily disable your attacker. The shock is more powerful than a stun gun and does not require direct contact. Make sure you practice using your taser before you are in a negative situation. This goes with all self-defense weapons. You don’t want to waste any time when you need to protect yourself.

www.laneselfdefense.com/c2taser.htm
Don’t forget the practical options. Having a small and portable but heavy-duty flashlight allows you to see in the dark and makes a useful blunt object. A good crack on the head is an old-fashioned defense. Another is your cell phone. One of the best non-lethal defense weapons available is a call for help.

If you’re anything like me, you get a slight sense of fear when you see a medium or larger sized dog approaching you with no owner in sight. Don’t get me wrong. I’m a huge dog fan. In fact, my English Springer Spaniel named Wrigley is lying at my feet as I write this.
The problem with encountering a dog that you don’t know, however, is that you never know how the dog is going to react to you. Does the dog sense that you are a threat to him? Or does the dog see you as a friendly face and want you to pet him or scratch him behind his ears? You won’t really know the answer to these questions until the dog reacts…and then it’s probably too late to do anything to protect yourself…unless you’re already prepared for a dog encounter.

www.laneselfdefense.com/dogrepellent.htm
The item shown above is special formulation of pepper spray that is specifically for use on dogs. This is a slightly weaker strength of pepper spray than what is used by police to control riots and by private citizens wanting to protect themselves. One quick, one-second shot of this Muzzle Dog Repellent in the face of an angry, attacking dog will stop the dog in his tracks…but won’t cause any permanent damage to the animal. Perhaps you think this is cruel to the animal, but all you are doing is defending yourself from a potentially violent and lethal attack.
If you have ever worked with hot jalapeno or some other type of hot pepper and then accidentally rubbed your eyes, then you know somewhat what the sting of pepper spray feels like. Should a dog get a burst of this Muzzle Pepper Spray in his face, he will be too busy rolling around in the grass trying to get this irritant out of his eyes to bother you. This should give you enough time to get out of harm’s way.
Another device that is helpful in preventing dog attacks is this electronic dog chaser, which is shown here:

www.laneselfdefense.com/dogchaser.htm
The Dog Chaser device emits a high frequency sound (similar to a dog whistle) that is extremely disturbing to a dog. Human’s can’t hear sound frequencies at this pitch, but the dog sure can…and the dog HATES this sound. A dog will do everything they can to get as far away as possible from this noise. You know the sound of someone scratching their fingernails across a blackboard? Well, to dogs, this sound is just like that…only 10 times worse. The Dog Chaser device also has 2 white, LED lights that create a “strobe light” effect in the dog’s face and is a back up measure to startle the dog and stop it in it’s tracks from attacking their victim.
These products are perfect for anyone who has a job that requires them to encounter dogs from time to time such as mail carriers, package delivery persons, meter readers, landscapers, gardeners, security guards and others.
These products are also great if you like to be outdoors and run, rollerblade or bike in a neighborhood that might have strange and/or aggressive dogs in the area. Remember, it’s always better to be safe than sorry!

Here are some tips on avoiding violent crimes. Women especially should be careful of sexual assault against them and safety products such as pepper spray, mace, stun guns and self defense training can help them in the event that they are faced with any kind if impending danger.
Make sure you use initials instead of first names on your mail box and phone listing. Avoid being alone in an apartment laundry room or parking garage. Never admit on the phone or at the door that you are alone. It is risky to accept a ride home from someone that you just met. If you decide to physically resist assault, remember that your goal is to incapacitate the attacker long enough to run to safety and get help. Or you can use your safety weapons to protect yourself.
Avoid carrying valuable items or large amounts of money. Always think ahead. For example, when traveling at night, have your keys ready to enter the house or to start the car. If you are confronted by a robber, the best advice is to cooperate at first and find an opportunity to use your peppery spray, stun gun, or mace.
When using an automatic bank teller, always be watchful of any suspicious people around you. The changes of being robbed at night are much greater, especially if you are alone. If you find someone waiting and watching outside in the area of an ATM machine, do not use it. Leave the area and report the incident to the police immediately. You could save someone else from being a victim of crime.
Stay in a well-lit area that is busy. Avoid walking alone and avoid known troubled spots. When you carry a purse, hold it close to your body rather than by the handles. Do not wrap purse straps around your wrist, because you can get hurt in a struggle.
Carry only what you need in a purse or wallet and not everything that you have. Avoid using shortcuts through dark alleys, fields or vacant lots. If you think you are being followed by a stalker, cross the street and change directions a few times. Go quickly to a well lit area where there are a lot of people. You do not want an attacker to know where you live.
You don’t want to give the robbers any clues to find you. Travel in a group of friends. It is more than likely that an attacker will rethink his or her decision to attack when you are in a group. Make sure you all have the right safety products to use if you are being attacked. Self defense techniques will be helpful to someone or all in the group.
You have to really be aware of the environment around you. Don’t ever walk without scanning your surroundings. To avoid walking in to a trap, make sure you plan your outings. Know the area before you attempt the trip. Whenever you are going out at night, try not to travel alone. Have someone in your group pick you up instead of driving by yourself, if that is possible. Parking lot crimes are prevalent and you don’t want to get caught without enough knowledge and information to protect yourself. You should always also be equipped with the right safety tools to protect yourself. Some of these safety tools are pepper sprays, stun guns, mace and self defense classes. It is very important to carry one or all of these safety tools.
Avoid underground or multi story car parks especially at night as they are breeding grounds for vandalism and crime. If they already exist, danger could be minimized by limiting entry points. If you live in a gated community, you are at an advantage and can park your car in front of your home.
Car parks should be no more than sixty meters from dwellings and the path should be well lit and free from shrubbery. Visitor’s car parks should be well lit, clearly defined and visible from dwellings. If it is desirable to limit access to dwellings, make sure access via car parks is monitored well. In high crime areas, advanced technological surveillance methods may be needed in car parks such as surveillance cameras, hidden wireless cameras and even alarms.
For example, an infrared unit can be made available, which detects the presence of intruders, but not cats and dogs, by body heat and automatically switches on all lights in the car park and turns them off after fifteen to twenty minutes.
Surveillance cameras are a great safety tools for businesses. Individuals who own parking garages need them to monitor and help the customers to feel safe leaving their vehicles and going back to their vehicles. Hidden wireless cameras may be more effective since the thieves or prowlers don’t know that it even exists.
Car parks that are enclosed are excellent candidates for this type of surveillance equipment and method. If there is a security guard at the gate, he or she will be able to monitor the parking garage more efficiently. It is in the best interest of the parking garage to take care of their patrons so many of them are getting the hint and providing many different types of safety measures.
Underground garages are the most susceptible to the occurrences of crime. This is where the surveillance equipment is well needed. Most underground garages do carry it, but you must pay attention or ask the security at the gate if there is a surveillance camera before you park your vehicle there.
You must be aware at all times of your environment because the thief is always watching you and trying to find ways to beat the system. There are robbers who don’t even care if there is a surveillance system or don’t take the time to look for one. They are so brazen these days that the least you can do is to carry a pepper spray, mace or stun gun to protect yourself. You cannot depend on the garage owner to solely provide your protection.
Be aware of your surroundings when you do park your vehicle in a garage. Never take it for granted that there are surveillance cameras around. Try not to use a parking garage at nights. Park your vehicle on the street if you can.
