Another attack on Lake Phalen in St. Paul

Friday, April 3rd, 2009

For the third time in month, a person was attacked in the Lake Phalen area of St. Paul. This time, it was a 23 year old woman jogger, according a story on KARE-11 TV.

It’s sad that some person or persons are intent on targeting people in this area and making them feel vulnerable. Most of these cases have not involved robbery attempts, just criminal assault. I don’t know whether these criminals are frustrated about the economy and have turned to taking their frustrations out on innocent victims, but I do know that is has to stop!

I would love to see one of these criminals run into someone carrying pepper spray or a Taser and getting a taste of their own medicine.

ANYONE can be a CRIMINAL.

Thursday, March 5th, 2009

I just saw this story on the local news tonight about a man who had stolen a car. This thief was so proud of himself that he actually called 911 and reported that he had stolen a car and, since he was much smarter than the police, they would never catch him!

Well, he was wrong. The police arrived at his residence the next day and arrested him. You see, the police have this new fangled device called “caller ID”. It lets them see exactly who is calling them and provides the callers phone number, etc. This feature is very useful for determining who called them in case the caller gets disconnected at some point during the phone call. People that need help, or are reporting to authorities that someone else needs help, can get disconnected for various reasons like passing out, trying to escape a dangerous situation like a criminal chasing them, etc.

It turns out that caller ID also comes in real handy when the authorites are trying to locate a REALLY STUPID CRIMINAL!

Maybe it’s just me, but it sure seems like there is a lot more crime these days. I think that when times get tough, Americans naturally do whatever they can to survive. Most of us with an education and some work experience have options regarding what type of work we will accept even in the current dismal state of the economy.

If you’re young and stupid, you probably don’t have many (or any) sources of income to turn to. Unfortunetly, it seems like there are more people turning to crime these days as a way to support themselves. The crime industry is an equal idiot employment opportunity. There are no resumes needed, no job interviews to go on, no sending your resume off into some black box and just praying that SOMEONE will eventually invite you to meet for an interview.

Can you imagine some armed robber holding up a gas station and the clerk behind the window asking the robber “Is this your first robbery attempt? Because you act like you don’t have much experience at this sort of thing. How many robbery’s have you successfully pulled off in the past? Have you actually ever shot a person? I’m sorry, but I really don’t think you’re qualified to pull off this robbery. I think it’s best if you just leave because we would like to pursue some other, more qualifed robbers. If you will just leave a business card, we’ll add your information to our database of other criminals and follow up with you if we have a need for your services within the next 12 months.”

What is YOUR life worth?

Sunday, March 1st, 2009

I just registered my new TASER C2 with TASER International and was thinking I made a pretty good investment in the safety of myself and my family. Let me explain how valuable this device is, in case you’re not familiar the TASER C2.

c2 blue2

The TASER C2 is a self-defense electronic control device Manufactured by TASER International, the same company that manufactures TASERs used by Law Enforcement personnel all over the world. The TASER C2 is just as effective as the TASER used by Law Enforcement, plus it has some smart additional features which make it perfect for any ordinary citizen to use.

The TASER C2 uses a replaceable cartridge containing compressed nitrogen to deploy to the small probes that are attached to the TASER C2 by insulated conductive wires with a maximum length of 15 feet. The TASER C2 transmits electrical pulses along the wires and into the body of affecting the sensory and motor functions of the peripheral nervous system. The energy can penetrate up to 2 inches of clothing, or 1 inch per probe.

How does a TASER work?
The human nervous system communicates with simple electrical impulses. The command center (brain and spinal cord) processes information and makes decisions. The peripheral nervous system includes the sensory and motor nerves. The sensory nerves carry information from the body to the brain (temperature, touch, etc.) the motor nerves carry commands from the brain to the muscles to control movement and can be involuntary in response to the sensory information. An example would be involuntary muscle reaction to pull the hand away from a hot object.

TASER technology uses similar electrical pulses to costs stimulation that affects the century and motor nerves. No muscular incapacitation (NMI) occurs when a device is able to cause involuntary stimulation of both the sensory nerves and the motor nerves. It is not dependent on pain and is effective on subjects with a high level of pain tolerance.

Previous generations of stun guns could primarily affect the Senator nerves only, resulting in pain compliance. A person with a very high tolerance pain (e.g., a drug abuser or a trained, focused fighter) might be able to fight through the pain of a traditional stun gun.

Electricity must be able to flow between the probes of the electrodes.

Electricity generally follows the path of least resistance between the probes. The greater the spread between the probes on the target, generally the greater the NMI effectiveness.

Electricity will generally not pass to others in contact with the subject unless contact is made directly between or on the probes.

Electricity can arc through clothing.

Exposure to water will not cause electrocution to increase the power to the subject (electrical charge is fixed inside the TASER device, and will not increase significantly even with environmental changes).

TASER technology uses similar electrical pulses to cause stimulation that affects the sensory and motor nerves. Neromuscular Incapacitation (NMI) occurs when a device is able to cause an involuntary stimulation of both the sensory nerves and the motor nerves. It is not dependent on pain and is effective on subjects of the high level of pain tolerance.

SPECIAL FEATURES TO PREVENT MISUSE
Every time a TASER C2 cartridge is deployed, at least 24 small, confetti -like AFID tags are ejected. Each AFID is printed with the serial number of the cartridge deployed, allowing law enforcement agencies to determine the registered owner of the cartridge and track citizen use if ever used in a criminal act.

You are required to complete a criminal background check in order to receive a unique code that will be used to activate your TASER C2. This means that when a TASER C2 has been fired, it will be much easier for the police to track down the registered owner of the device.

The TASER C2, with laser guided targeting, costs $350. It costs another $10 to register your unit with TASER. This is a one-time fee.

The TASER C2 is certainly not the cheapest self defense device available, but I feel this is the most effective, non-lethal self defense device currently on the market and well worth the investment in the safety of myself and my family.

You SAY you WANT a REVOLUTION?

Saturday, February 21st, 2009

Another week, another disappointing stock market. But, cheer up! I think some long overdue change is on it’s way. And remember, there’s more to life than just money. To paraphrase Abraham Lincoln, “This too, shall pass.”

We don’t have to look too far to see the signs of outrageous greed that ran rampant during the last stock market bull cycle. Here are just some of the highlights from the last week of media reports that exhibit the excessive greediness of corporate executives:

  • The Trustee in the Bernard Madoff bankruptcy case reported that the financier hadn’t bought any securities for the past 13 years!

  • The SEC filed fraud charges against Texas billionaire Allen Stanford and two other executives of Stanford Group of selling $8 billion in high-yield certificates of deposit with impossibly high interest rates in a worldwide scheme.

  • GM CEO Rick Wagoner was quoted at a press conference stating: “We have to restructure…so we can be viable at a sales level that is dramatically lower than what we ever anticipated.” Huh? You mean GM Executives never considered what would happen if oil prices increased from historically low levels and what impact that would have on their dominant market share position and sales of gas guzzling SUV’s and trucks? Were they too busy working on their golf game to bother with such small details?

  • Speaking of General Motors, GM and Chrysler told the U.S. Congress that they could need $21.6 billion more in aid to keep them going. GM said it could need $100 billion in financing if it filed for bankruptcy, and CEO Rick Wagner said bankruptcy would be “risky” and would only be used as a last resort. I wonder what Wagner really means when he says that a GM bankruptcy would be “risky”? Risky for him, personally, and his future salary and earnings prospect perhaps?

  • UBS agreed to pay $780 million and identify some American clients with undeclared bank accounts, to settle a tax case and avert criminal charges. But Switzerland’s finance minister vowed that the country’s bank secrecy would be maintained.

But, as Bob Dylan would say, “The times, they are a changing.” Yes, the Federal Goverment is throwing an awful lot of money at our financial markets to try and stop the decline in our financial markets and restore some resembelance of confidence again. As inflationary as the long-term effects of this loose money policy will be, they really don’t have a choice if they have any hope of preventing the global economy from falling into a long, deep and severe depression.

Critics of President Obama’s new housing rescue plan say they don’t want to pay for their neighbor’s mortgage in the form of higher taxes. Well, I don’t think anyone is happy about paying higher taxes, but what choice do we really have? The economy is messed up, big time. We can’t blame President Obama for this because things were already messed up by the time he was elected into office. He could complain about the crappy job that he inherited from the outgoing administration, but he’s not. He’s doing everything that he can to try and stop the bleeding and prevent any further damage from occuring.

Now, to get back to the headline of this long-winded blog post, It was clear from the November 2008 U.S. Presidential results that Americans wanted change. Not just a little tweak, but a major change. Well, change IS coming. It has to, or else we are all dead. Not just the US economy, but the global economy. How can you imagine that a person as insane as Adolph Hitler became so powerful? Germany was weak from the last major recession and people were starving and desperate for change. These people were so desperate that they decided that while Hitler had some radical ideas, nothing else had worked so far. They HAD to DO SOMETHING! So they put this guy named Hitler with some crazy ideas into power to see if that might fix things. And the rest is history, as they say.

Please don’t misunderstand and think that I’m comparing President Obama to Adolph Hitler, because that is NOT WHAT I’M DOING. American’s are smart enough to learn from the past mistakes of others and I think Obama is exactly what America needs right now to get us out of this financial mess without creating more problems down the road.

Just to be safe, you might want to pick up a C2 TASER in case their’s an uprising in your neigborhood…

A Taser is simply a less lethal alternative to a hand gun. Afterall, you just want to stop your neighbor from attacking you and stealing your stuff. You don’t want to actually KILL HIM, right?

How Safety Lights can Protect you in Today’s World

Wednesday, February 18th, 2009

When you think of self defense products you typically think about pepper spray, stun guns or personal security alarms. However, there is another effective form of self defense that is not usually considered and that is a safety light.

How Safety Lights May Help

Safety lights are designed to light up the way when you are out walking on a dark night. Not only do they help you to see better, but they also enable you to draw attention to yourself. This may seem like a bad idea; after all, who wants to draw attention to themselves at night when there are potential attackers out there? Surely the attacker will see you and find it easier to attack you? Well surprisingly drawing attention to yourself does not increase the risk of you being attacked, instead it prevents it.
By drawing attention to yourself with a safety light it enables other people to see you. So if you are attacked there is a better chance that somebody will witness what is happening. Help can then be called and your attacker will be scared off. So that is one way in which a safety light can protect you.

By lighting up the way a safety light will also help you to see potential attackers. Often when you are walking late at night it is difficult to see what is in front of you. That is why so many people are attacked because their attacker can see them, but they did not see their attacker until it was too late. By seeing where you are going you will be able to assess the possible risks ahead and that can potentially stop you from being attacked.

Choosing a Good Safety Light

There are different lights that you can purchase but typically the best types to get are the LED versions. You can also choose between flashing lights and simple constant lights. If you use a flashing light that does help to draw attention to you when you are being attacked. A constant light is better to help you to see where you are going. For best results it would be a good idea to purchase a LED light that has the ability to flash but which also has a constant light on it too.

If you want a light which is convenient to carry then you should choose the Cell Phone flash light. This is designed to peel and stick to your cell phone and it can easily be operated whenever it is needed. It lasts for up to 6,000 hours and you can use it literally everywhere. It is small enough to easily carry around and use outside and generally it is one of the best lights available.

If you just want the simplest of safety lights then the LED light is what you need. It comes with seven different flashing patterns and you can choose from three different styles. There is a wrist strap, a bicycle light and a belt clip. It has a very powerful light and the seven different flashing functions will help you to signal help if it is needed.

Overall safety lights may not be able to directly stop an attack, but they can help to prevent them. It would be a good idea to carry around another self defense product such as pepper spray if you really want to protect yourself, or even just a personal safety alarm to further draw attention to yourself in the event of an attack. You can even purchase combined safety alarms and lights and that may be the best option for you.

Dumb Car Napper gets Nailed

Wednesday, October 29th, 2008

OK. Every once in a while we all need a good laugh. This story is a true story and is totally laughable and sad at the same time. While you read the story think of how differently things could have worked out if there had been an alarm system like the Voice Alert System 6 to warn the car owners.

There was a man who stole a Porsche Carrera and got caught. He was charged with grand theft auto, and was told that he was to appear in court. No problem, except for one thing. He had no transportation. That’s why he stole such a high profile car to begin with. Maybe he thought he would totally blend in driving in a car worth over $100,000. Wrong. That’s why he was going to court. Police didn’t think he blended well.

What was the next logical move for the 37 year old San Francisco hair stylist? Yes, you know but just don’t want to think it out loud. He stole another car. He had to get to court!

So, he stole a Lexus SUV - keys and all. Police noticed the SUV when people started to gather around it because there were several Yorkshire Terriers wandering around inside the car.

The result was that he was convicted in the Porsche crime and then charged with receiving a stolen vehicle, receiving stolen property and animal cruelty for leaving the puppies in the vehicle. It doesn’t get much more ridiculous than this.

The serious side to this is that there could have been a way for the real owners of both cars to avoid having them stolen. The Voice Alert System 6 is an annunciator system featuring wireless PIR sensors transmitters and a remote receiver/speaker base unit. Users record their own alert messages and are then notified with their own voice message when activity in a monitored area is detected. Key applications include:

The Voice Alert System 6 can be used to monitor your home or office. It can monitor your driveway - in case a child is around, or in case someone is trying to steal your car. Since it is wireless and covers an area of up to 1000 feet - even through walls and up staircases - it will alert you in your own voice with a message you record that something is happening in a particular area. In the case above, the monitor could have said that there was movement in the garage or the driveway, which would have alerted the owner of the cars to investigate and prevent the cars from being stolen.

Protect yourself in advance. The Voice Alert System 6 is effective and affordable. It can keep your cars, your children and your home safe.

Pool Alarm Keeps Children Safe

Tuesday, September 2nd, 2008

One of the scariest experiences a parent can have is to discover their toddler slipping into their pool - or someone else’s pool - without anyone noticing. Let’s say that the child is 4 years old and has been playing outside with the older children watching. The older child turns their back and the 4 year old, captivated by the shiny cool water, is playing in it. You walk onto the scene just in time to keep the 4 year old from moving any further and risking being drowned.

We all know at least one person that this has happened to, and many of us know someone whose child almost drowned or actually drowned quite innocently in a split second. Even the most conscientious of parents and caregivers need extra help watching their children if they have a pool.

Now there is effective and affordable help available. The Pool Alarm is an innovative system that monitors your pool and sounds an alarm when children or pets fall into the pool. If this happens, an electronic sensor is triggered and an alarm sounds loudly - both at the pool and in your house by remote receiver.

The Pool Alarm also has built in safety features. It cannot be turned off unless you deactivate it yourself. If there is an attempt to remove the alarm, it will sound loudly and alert you. It runs on a 9 volt battery which is long lasting and the remote receiver comes with a 12 volt battery supply. The remote can be installed up to 200 feet away from the main unit to alert you inside your home if the main unit goes off.

Drowning is a major cause of death for many children. In California, drowning is the main cause of accidental death in children age 4 and under.

Don’t let your child become a statistic. Don’t allow yourself to be in the situation where you find your child in the water and in harms way. Protect your children with a Pool Alarm.

1 door alarm slideaway

Okay we spend lots of time trying to protect ourselves and our families, and that is a good thing. We focus on keeping people out of our homes while we sleep, here is another consideration keeping your teenagers in.

Let’s face it we have all been there either as teenagers or parents of teenagers. We can’t be everywhere at once and most of us appreciate the value of a good night’s sleep.

What if there was a way to be alerted when your teen tries to sneak in or out in the wee small hours? Would it be worth $7.95 per entry point? If you answered yes it is time to put your money where your mouth is.

This compact, attractive Magnetic Door/ Window Alarm uses magnetic affinity to initiate its 110 decibel siren. The base of the alarm is bolted to door or window frame, the actuator is connected to the window or door. The alarm is activated by opening the door or window. Great for any door or window, particularly those hard to protect sliding glass doors. Requires 3 lithium button cell batteries (included).

Now you can rest easy! Whether it is your children or an actual burglar you will be alerted. 110 decibels is about the amount of noise that a semi would make driving through your living room. Most of us couldn’t sleep through that.

The alarm can be turned off with a discreet switch if you deem necessary.

Nanny Cameras: Hidden Assurance in the Home

Friday, April 25th, 2008

In the current climate of abuse scandals and general mistrust, it is no surprise that more and more people are turning to surveillance. In no area is this more common than childcare.

You love your children more than anyone else in the world. Why wouldn’t you want to know that they are safe and in good hands? Most parents feel the same way, which is why many are turning to nanny cameras. Parents want to verify that they are paying the right kind of person to keep an eye on their kids.

Several abuse scandals have hit the media about babysitters caught on tape abusing children. One nanny was discovered carrying a child by his leg, another shaking and dropping a child. Another scene showed two infants left unattended on the edge of a couch. Any of these actions can lead to permanent injury or fatalities. The thought of these things happening to a child makes any parent shudder. Nanny cameras can provide assurance that childcare workers are doing their job and presenting a safe environment for children.

A variety of different cameras are priced according to features and how advanced they are. Some allow remote computer access. Other actually broadcast a live feed that can be accessed by cell phone. More elaborate systems allow remote Internet access while simultaneously recording the footage on your home computer’s hard drive. That way the video can be retained as evidence, should anything objectionable occur. These extensive systems offer several cameras that you can place all over your home to allow comprehensive surveillance.

Nanny cameras come in any variety of household devices and even teddy bears. Air purifiers, clock radios, lamps, books, stereo speakers and even DVD players masquerade as normal household items, yet contain a hidden lens. With the variety of items offered now, cameras can be easily hidden all over your home.

When considering what kind of nanny camera you will purchase, consider your needs. Wires can be suspicious if they are coming out of a houseplant. Also decide if you need a wireless transmitter if you want the signal to be accessible outside the home or away from a computer. If you chose a wireless nanny camera, don’t forget the batteries.

Consider the following before bringing a nanny camera into your home. Hidden camera surveillance is legal. However, it is illegal to secretly records speech in several states. Check the laws where you live to make sure you aren’t breaking any. Any evidence collected illegally is dismissed in court. Also, make sure that you aren’t putting your children in jeopardy to “prove” someone is acting poorly by getting them on camera.

Decide whether you will tell your nanny that they are being recorded. Any nanny that would be severely disturbed at the idea would be a person you may want to reconsider hiring. Professional nannies that do their job well and with heart will want to prove their worth. The camera can be a screening device before you even turn it on.

Make sure to take just as much care with whom you hire as your nanny as you do with the camera you purchase. Legal nannies have Social Security numbers and a job history. References are not always enough. Make sure a thorough background check can be done on the person you hire to care for your children. Pay attention to your impression of that person. If you have any doubts that the nanny does not have the absolute best interests of your children at heart, don’t wait for a camera to prove it.

Stay Safe,

Steve Lane

Keeping your children safe while they are alone

Thursday, April 17th, 2008

Working parents have a lot to think about when it comes to keeping their family protected especially the children who are the ones that are vulnerable. The majority of Americans and people around the world are a part of the workforce and has to sometimes leave their children home by themselves.

There is much anxiety, worry, frustration or even fear involved in leaving a child or children “on their own,” when school lets. Sometimes, child care arrangements with neighbors and relatives break down or there simply are not many alternatives.

What can you do?

• Make sure that your children are ready to care for themselves
• Make sure you have an security alarm system
• Teach the child or children how to turn on and turn off the alarm security system.
• Teach your children basic safety tips and rules
• Know where you children are, what they are doing and who they are with
• Check on your kids
• Work out a kind of telephone code that will let them know that you are the one who is calling them. For example, tell them to listen for four rings and then you would hang up and call back immediately.

Are you ready? Can your children –

• Be trusted to go straight home after school?
• Easily use the telephone, locks and kitchen appliances?
• Follow rules and instructions well?
• Handle unexpected situations without panicking?
• Stay home alone without being afraid?
• Have a certain maturity?

Talk it over with them, and listen to their worries and ideas. Work out rules on having friends over, household chores, homework, and television. Remember, staying at home alone can build a child’s self esteem, sense of responsibility, and practical skills. Your child can be afraid and you don’t know so make sure you have a lengthy discussion to find out if this is the case.

Teach your “home alone” children

• How to call 9-1-1 or your area’s emergency number or call the operator?
• How to give directions to your house in case of an emergency?
• To check in with you or a neighbor immediately after arriving home
• Turn on the home alarm system as soon as they get home
• To never accept gifts or rides from people they don’t know well and who you did not approve of
• Come home straight after school. Don’t linger on the streets
• Walk in a group of other children or with another school mate. Never walk alone
• How to use the door, windows, and locks
• To never let anyone into the home without asking your permission
• To never let a caller at the door or on the phone know that they are alone
• To carry a house key with them in a safe place; inside a shirt pocket or sock. Do not leave the key under the door mat or on a ledge.
• How to escape in the case of a fire
• To not go into the house or apartment if things do not look right such as a broken window, ripped screen or opened door
• To let you know about anything that frightens them or makes them feel uncomfortable.

Your children are depending on you for their safety and protection. Be sure you get a home alarm system, electronic bark dog alarm, door alarm, window alarm or hidden wireless camera. It will be more comforting to you.

Using a nanny hidden wireless camera

Monday, March 24th, 2008

Hiring a babysitter or nanny comes with taking precautionary measures to make sure that you child or children are being properly taken care of. Every parent has that nightmare of a nanny that could abuse their children, even though they wish it not to happen. Taking the necessary steps to avoid the occurrence of such an unsightly event can mean the difference between life and death.

For those eight hours that you may be gone to work or a few hours away from your children makes a whole lot of difference in the world. Your children’s safety is at stake and at the hands of a stranger who you do not yet know enough about. How do you protect your children without feeling as you are violating someone else’s privacy? What is most important? I would think that children’s security is more important. Make sure you learn more about your local laws in terms of installing a video camera in your home.

Even if you have thoroughly investigated your nanny, you should still have a nanny wireless camera installed in your home. You can go through the whole gamut of background checks, references and credit checks and still not know all you can about the nanny. The background check, references, and credit check don’t reveal the nanny’s personality or mood. You have to find that out the hard way or through the process of installing a hidden wireless camera especially if your children are very young and not able to explain themselves.

When your nanny leaves after you get home, you can put in the tape and watch the video to see what transpired while you were away from home. You may be shocked to see how the nanny spends the day or what she is doing to your child or children. What if you have a crazy nanny who drinks on the job or who shakes your child so hard because the child is crying? You would want to know, wouldn’t you?

A wireless hidden spy camera is the best way and most inexpensive method of having some extra eyes for you while you are gone. There are some day cares that have cameras installed and set up with the Internet so mothers especially can look at what their child is doing during the day. I think this is a brilliant idea. So why can’t homeowners who hire nannies to take care of their children do the same thing?

Of course, they can. The nanny hidden spy cameras are manufactured and disguised in the form of stuffed animals, soda cans, wall clocks, radios, mirrors, vases, and even picture frames. This will give parents the peace of mind to know that they have something to rely on that will provide some type of protection for their children.

Hidden wireless cameras add safety and security to every home and business. It provides a security level that is necessary in this society that we live in. No more can people be totally trusted to perform their duties when you are absent. The nanny wireless hidden camera is a parent’s best friend.

The Kid’s Alright

Tuesday, November 27th, 2007

When you watch a nature film about bears there’s one lesson that always comes through.

Don’t mess with baby bear.

Mama Bear will do anything to protect baby. It may just mean rearing up on her hind legs and letting out an earth-shattering growl. It might be chasing the fool who’s messing with her cub until the message is passed on. Or, it could be her chawing down on the interloper, bringing an abrupt end to a promising life.

The concern of a mother for her young isn’t just limited to the animal kingdom. (Although the documentaries may be.)

We see it all around. Women working very hard indeed to create a better future for their kids. It’s not just about directly taking care of the children, although that’s a big part. Changing diapers is no walk in the park. Keeping the toddlers from wandering into the street is a headache for years. Getting the kids to eat right, especially if it’s healthy food that they haven’t tried before, can try the patience of a saint.

And, don’t forget the sacrifices mothers make every day. Careers may be abandoned, or cut back, so that the kids get a little more quality Mom Time. Bigger houses, newer cars, and nicer vacations may all go by the board to make sure that the little ones have a better future.

Moms do so much to take care of their kids.

Here’s how you can do something very simple to protect your child.

http://www.laneselfdefense.com/kindergard.htm

The KinderGard Home Safety Kit is an inexpensive way to protect your children while they’re in your home. As you know, the home is the very most dangerous place for children. This isn’t because the home is super-dangerous, it’s just that the home is where young children spend so much of their time.

The KinderGard Home Safety Kit has an even dozen of health and life saving devices. Two cabinet latches keep things in their proper order and not on the kitchen floor. Four outlet plugs prevent the child from first learning about electricity by being electrocuted. A cabinet lock keeps children away from corrosive and poisonous substances. A door knob guard means that closed doors stay closed. Four corner cushions protect running children from the hard facts of furniture.

So, you too can take care of baby,

Steve Lane

P.S. It’s not just Mom that takes care of the kids.

Here’s the chance for Dad to get into the act.

Pool Safety for Families with Children.

Friday, June 29th, 2007

My wife and I think we’re pretty responsible parents taking care of our 15 month old son. One thing that we don’t have to worry as much about is pool safety involving our son. Sure, we have one of those little inflatable, kid pool’s that we have set up on the back deck that we have to keep a close eye on him when his anywhere near there. You certainly can’t just walk away and leave him by the pool…not even for a minute. The water is only about 4″ - 6″ deep, but that’s plenty deep to a child that doesn’t yet know what do if he should fall head first into the water. It’s a scary thought! Imagine walking back up to the kid pool where you just walked away from your son/daughter a minute ago and see them kicking and waving their arms while they are face down in the water! It’s enough to make MY heart skip a beat…

Like I said earlier, we don’t have to worry about pool safety as much with our son because we don’t have a pool at our house that we would have to worry about constantly. A co-worker of mine has a pool and he was just telling me the other day that it’s a major NEGATIVE selling point when it comes time to sell his house that he never even considered when he bought the place as a well to do, never married bachelor. Now that he’s married, his view towards a house with a pool has certainly changed.

Families with younger children worry A LOT about owning a house with a pool because of the major safety concern. What if they just walk away for a minute and then find that their child has fallen into the pool when they are not around? For families with young children, owning a house with a pool is just asking for trouble.

Well, if you ever find yourself in this situation, I have found some devices on the market that could help you out. There is a new pool alarm that works on water displacement technology. Essentially, this clever little device sits on your pool deck with a long arm that hangs down below the surface of the water. If anything weighing more than 15 pounds falls into the water, the water level will rise enough to sound an alarm that can be clearly heard by anyone near the pool or within ear shot of the wireless monitor that is within a 300′ range of the alarm.
