What is a TASER and how does it work?
A TASER is a type of weapon that uses EMD (electro-muscular disruption) technology. EMD weapons are an improvement over traditional stun weapons such as stun guns and stun batons that operate at a higher voltage, but lower wattage.
For example, a stun gun or stun baton may operate in the range of 80,000 to 900,000 volts and have a stun capacity of 7 to 14 watts. This level is strong enough to interfere with the communication signals of the central nervous system and cause a temporary loss of coordinated muscle control. The victim will be in a temporary state of shock and felt like they lost coordination.
The higher the voltage of the stun device, the greater the effectiveness of the weapon on the potential victim. While stun devices are normally quite effective, there is a small percentage of the population with a very high pain-tolerance that can maintain some limited aggression characteristics.
A 50,000 volt TASER, with a more powerful 18 to 26 watt pulse, disrupts the central nervous system and directly controls the skeletal muscles causing an uncontrollable contraction of the muscle tissue. The EMD effect overrides the victim's voluntary muscle control to such an extent that even the most pain-tolerant, aggressive attacker will be quickly immobilized and on the ground. The victim's muscles immediately go into overdrive. The muscles contract and release rapidly all at once, converting all the blood sugar into lactic acid, thus rendering the victim's muscles useless.
The TASER is used just like a gun, but with a long wire attached to the bullet and the gun that allows the victim to be "shocked". An individual simply aims the TASER at the victim and upon firing, two probes attached to 15' of trailing wires are expelled by compressed nitrogen gas that propels the probes at a speed of 135 feet per second. The electrical charge passes to the victim's body where the barbed probes have attached to the victim's clothes or bare skin. An initial 7 second charge disables the attacker and continuous pulses every 2 seconds keep the victim from regaining control or removing the wires. This initial cycle continues for about 30 seconds. While the victim is temporarily dazed and disoriented, the TASER owner can push a button to disconnect the probes from the TASER and escape the threatening situation.
A TASER does not require body penetration to work. The powerful electrical current will "jump" up to two inches as long as BOTH probes are attached to the victim's skin or clothing. This powerful electrical current is effective, but causes no long-term damage to nerves, muscles or body tissue. Extensive testing has proven the effectiveness and safety of the TASER.
